Behavioral Solutions

Behavior is communication. We help schools and families decode the message behind the behavior to create lasting, positive change.

Finding the Function

Challenging behaviors don't happen in a vacuum—they serve a purpose. Before we can change a behavior, we must understand why it is happening.

Whether a student is seeking attention, trying to escape a difficult task, seeking sensory input, or trying to obtain a tangible item, identifying this "function" is the key to unlocking a solution.

The 4 Functions of Behavior:

  • 1. Escape / Avoidance
  • 2. Attention Seeking
  • 3. Access to Tangibles
  • 4. Sensory / Automatic
A

Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA)

The FBA is our diagnostic tool. It is a systematic process of gathering data to identify the specific events that trigger a behavior (antecedents) and the responses that maintain it (consequences).

  • Direct observation across multiple settings
  • Interviews with teachers, parents, and staff
  • Data analysis to pinpoint patterns and triggers

Behavioral Intervention Planning (BIP)

Once we know the "why," we build the plan. A BIP is a proactive roadmap that teaches the student safer, more appropriate ways to get their needs met.

Prevention

Modifying the environment to reduce triggers and set the student up for success.

Replacement

Teaching specific skills (like asking for a break) that serve the same function as the behavior.
